In general it is a less aggressive form of skin cancer and easily cured. It is very rare for BCC to spread beyond the skin unlike SCC’s and melanoma. Like BCC it has low and high risk forms and does have the potential to spread to lymph nodes. Facial sites are particularly high risk for this. It can be fatal but that is rare. They typically present as a pigmented spot but there are also non pigmented forms which may present as a pink lump. Melanoma has potential to spread beyond the skin to lymph nodes and other body organs. The thicker the melanoma the greater the risk for spread hence early detection is vital. In New Zealand, the majority of people are diagnosed with melanoma at an early stage. The outlook for most people diagnosed with early stage melanoma is good.
